VOLUNTEER LIST

As CNSC grows larger and we have more and bigger events, we find ourselves running out of people to help with all we do.

                     See article page 2

NEW WAY TO GIVE!

Through the efforts of Theresa Becker, CNSC has been added to the State Charitable Giving Program.  Anyone who is an employee of the State of Montana can have a payroll deduction made to the Cancer Network by making a request to do so.  So, if you are paid every two weeks, for example, you could make a $50 donation to CNSC for a mere $2.00 per pay check!  What an easy way to help your neighbors in Sanders County.

WINE TASTING & FASHION SHOW

The 6th Annual Wine Tasting & Fashion Show was once again a huge success.  On October 11, McGowan’s Grocery, Mountain West Clothing, and Summit Beverage Company donated tasty treats, wonderful wine, and outstanding models for the Fashion Show.

Photo Courtesy Bina Eggensberger, Sanders County LedgerNearly 100 patrons enjoyed the evening, bidding on numerous silent auction items and one live auction item.

The live auction item was the hand-stitched quilt donated by The Quilting House in Thompson Falls.  This quilt was the one stitched by many hands during the 30 hour Quilting Marathon held in March.  The bidding started a little slowly, but before it was over, the quilt brought in $850 to CNSC.  Put in terms of how that helped our cause, 3 more Sanders County residents currently undergoing treatment for cancer can be helped.  All together, the evening resulted in nearly $6,800 for CNSC.  Again, this evening makes it possible for us to give a gift to 23 people.

CNSC would like to thank Erika & Bruce Swanson, Eric Meckler, Laura Rehbein, Summit Beverage Company, all the generous people and businesses who donated items for the silent auction and all the people who were so giving in their bidding on the auction items.  Everyone made the evening an outstanding success.

Be sure to watch for the 7th Annual Wine Tasting & Fashion Show to be held October 9, 2008!  Hope to see everyone there.

SPRING RENEWAL

The 2nd Annual Time For Renewal event will be held March 9, 2008.  During this event, CNSC will have a spaghetti feed, a silent auction on baskets of goodies, and a walk/run sponsored by The Runner’s Edge (Anders, Tim, and Carol Brooker).  Please be sure to check the local papers as the time draws closer for information about this event.  You can also get information by calling 826-4278.

From page 1 VOLUNTEER LIST

How would you like to be a volunteer with this organization?  You don’t have to pay any dues, you don’t have to attend any meetings, you just have to be willing to come to the events to help with setting them up, help during the event, then help with the clean-up.  We could really use the help.  We would make a list of the volunteers, then call as many as we need to help at the various events during the year.  The longer our list, the fewer the number of calls we would make to each volunteer.  Please consider becoming one of our helpers.

HISTORY

A number of years ago, a group of quilters in Plains decided they would sew a quilt, then auction it off to help raise money for one of their friends who was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  From this modest beginning, the group continued to expand – first into a group who raised money just for breast cancer victims.  During this beginning time, the group operated under the auspices of the Clark Fork Valley Hospital Foundation, a non-profit organization who graciously offered us a home as a non-profit fund raising organization.

As we continued to grow, it became clear that we needed to be an organization unto ourselves.  We applied for and received our own 501 (c) (3) designation so we could qualify as our own non-profit group.  This makes it possible for the generous people giving us gifts to qualify as tax-deductible.  At this same time, we became active in the Montana Community Foundation program.  Each year we try to add to this foundation amount so at some point in the future, we will be able to use the interest profits from this fund for gifts to our constituents.  Those making donations can also choose to make a donation on our behalf directly to the MCF and receive a tax credit.

We have 2 ‘signature’ events: the Wine Tasting & Fashion Show in the fall and the Time For Renewal in the spring.  In addition to these events, we are often involved in various raffles for pictures, quilts, etc.  We have always said that the more money we can raise, the more money we can give.  When this organization first started, a gift was a one time gift for $75.00 for those suffering from breast cancer.  As we have grown and raised more money, the gifts now are an annual gift for $300.00 for any Sanders County resident undergoing cancer treatment.  The yearly giving period starts January 1 of each year.

Currently, there are 10 members who act as the organization’s governing board.  We are always looking for additional members to help.

Recipients
Q.  Who benefits from the generosity of Sanders County Residents and Businesses?

A.  Anyone who is a resident of Sanders County and needs financial assistance while undergoing cancer treatments.  Annual gifts are given without restrictions on the use of the funds and names are held in strict confidence.

Q.  How Do I Apply?
A.  Pick up an easy to fill out application available at Medical Clinics, Sanders County Banks, home health personnel, Nancy Jo Howarth, or Joyce Dougan Physical Therapy.  Call 826-4383 for any further information about applying for assistance.  All applications are completely confidential.

Carpool - Senior Bus Transportation
The price of gasoline has created even greater hardships on our neighbors who have to travel great distances for treatment.  We are often asked if we know of anyone else who is traveling and if they would be willing to share a ride.  Up until now, we have not felt comfortable sharing that information.  We would like to offer the following:  if anyone is traveling for treatment and wouldn’t mind sharing a ride, please call or e-mail Kathy Miller and leave your information pln4278@blackfoot.net or
826-4278.  Kathy will keep that information on hand and then use it if someone else calls to ask about sharing a ride.  She will not coordinate the transportation, but will share the name of the individual willing to have another rider for the trip.  CNSC also encourages Sanders County Residents to use the Senior Bus Transportation system.  It may not always be the most convenient, but is surely the most inexpensive way to travel!
