Helping Others Help Themselves

How Can You Help Cancer Network?

We recognize that the economy has had a serious impact on many of us in Sanders County, but do you know that if everyone who received this newsletter sent us $10, we would raise close to $9000? That would provide financial assistance to 18 residents to help with their expenses while fighting cancer. CNSC currently offers a $500 gift, however, if we can’t continue to raise money at a high rate, we will have to lower the amount of each gift we give. That prospect is one none of us willing to accept!

So, how can you help? CNSC has several major fund raisers during the year. In fact we have one more this year – we are selling Chinese Lanterns in hopes of starting a new tradition for a New Year’s Celebration. We

plan to have a mass launching at the Fairgrounds, on New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 8:00. If you have seen the Disney movie Tangled you have seen what these lanterns look like. The Fair Foundation will be serving cocoa and chili from 6:00 - 8:00. Lanterns can be written on with messages or names of loved ones. They are then lit, fill up with hot air and lift off and fly until the wax runs out. They are biodegradable, so when they land, they don’t lie on the ground and create clutter forever! If you are interested in participating please call

826-4278 to get a lantern or to have one of us come and remove a spent lantern from your property. Lanterns will also be on sale the night of the launching for $10.

Valentine’s Day Quilt Raffle - Look for us at your local grocery store where the quilt will be on display and tickets will be available.

Second Annual Luncheon- honoring survivors, April

14, Elk’s Club, Thompson Falls. This event will also include a silent auction.

June – Skunk Alley Run, Hot Springs Distances for both runners and walkers.

Fair Time - 2nd annual Chicks n Chaps Rodeo Event.

October – annual fundraiser in Plains

If traveling to an event is not in your plans, there are other ways you may be able to help CNSC in its mission to assist Sanders County residents with expenses during their cancer treatment. One person who received assistance from us several years ago tithes a percentage of her paycheck to us each month. If all her generous donations are added together over the years, she has single-handedly donated enough money to help at least 12 other people. Another resident who has passed away established a trust and CNSC has been able to approach this trust and receive funds.

Many groups have helped us by holding a raffle or donating money to us. These groups include Rod and Classics from Thompson Falls, Knights of Columbus, Plain’s Woman’s Club, and the VFW. The Printery in Plains donates the printing of our newsletter twice a year. The Printery, along with donations of photographs from Ed Moreth and Doris and John Haines, has put together put together a scenic calendar for the second year. These calendars are for sale at the Printery and the Ledger for $5. They would make nice ‘stocking stuffer’ gifts! CNSC has also produced a calendar that features pictures of some of your neighbors in Sanders County who have received assistance over the years. You can buy one of these at a variety of businesses in the county and at nearly all of the Senior Centers. Please call 826-4278 if you want one but cannot seem to locate them! Price is $10.

Thank You

Our sincerest thanks go to everyone who was involved in the 2011 fund raising events. From those who managed the events to all of you who, in you own ways, participated we can’t thank you enough. If it were not for the extraordinary generosity of all of you, CNSC would simply not exist. One thing we know for certain, even the though the entire county has been touched by the economic woes, resident of Sanders County will always come through for their neighbors and for a good cause. We are thankful you consider what we do a good cause. Your continued support defines our success.

Pictured above are CNSC Board Vice-President - Carol Brooker, Brandy Chisholm, CNSC Board President- Kathy Miller, Lisa Reed, and Katie Coe . The Chicks n Chaps were presenting their check for $2000 to CNSC.

Chicks n Chaps was a very successful fundraiser for both CNSC and Clark Fork Valley Hospital. Each group received a check

for $2000. Professional rodeo participants teach women about the various rodeo events and allow limited (safe) participation in these events. One of the highlights of the inaugural event was one of our board members (Betty Boehler)
riding the mechanical bull. Look for the event at
the fair in 2012.

The 10th Annual Wine Tasting and Style Show was held later than usual but was very successful. McGowan’s Grocery and Mountain West Clothing once again have touched many residents with their continued support. They started this even in the basement of the First Security Bank in Plains and have encouraged the growth of this event to its present day success. Nearly 50% of all contributions CNSC has received, over $60,000, has come through their efforts. This event is the

‘signature’ event and the largest consistent money raising event we sponsor.

Organizer of the Wine Tasting and representative of McGowan’s and Mountain West Clothing, Erica Lawyer, welcomes the attendees at the 10th Annual Wine Tasting in early November.

GIFTS GIVEN

01/01/01 – 11/26/11 478 gifts $138,550

5/11/11 – 11/26/11 37 gifts $18,500

If you have any other ideas of how we might raise funds, please let us know. CNSC Board members are willing to help you with your fundraiser. No amount of money is too small, nor is any donation insignificant. Believe us, anything helps and it all adds up! Look at the above number of gifts given and the amount of money involved. With all your help- we have made a very significant impact on a number of lives and on the economy of the county. Remember, all the money goes to residents of Sanders County. We have a very small overhead – paying for envelopes, stamps, stationery.

OUR M I S S I ON

The Cancer Network of Sanders County is a non- profit community based organization providing support to Sanders County residents undergoing cancer treatment.

HOW DO I GET HELP?

The only criterion for getting assistance from CNSC is that you are a Sanders County resident currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Our gift is an annual gift (once a calendar year.) Applications for assistance can be obtained from any of the financial institutions in the county, all of the CFVH clinics and the hospital, Nancy Jo Howarth, and local churches and Plains Physical Therapy If you are still having difficulty obtaining a form, call Kathy Miller (826-‐4278) or e-‐mail pln4278@blackfoot.net for help.
Also, if you are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, you not only qualify for assistance from CNSC, but you may also qualify for assistance from the American Cancer Society for housing/motel, gas, and other services. Please call Judy Pfaff at ACS for further information and assistance: Judy Pfaff,
406+728-‐1004 or e-‐mail her at
judy.pfaff@cancer.org in Missoula.

Montana Community Foundation CNSC has been slowly building equity in the Montana Community Foundation. When CNSC was founded, it was always the dream that someday we would be self-sufficient and be able to give our gifts funded by the interest produced from our investments in the Foundation. We are currently receiving some money from this investment but we are obviously not at a point where we can depend on that to fund all of our requests. If you are interested in giving a gift directly to the MCF, this gift can be used as a “tax credit” rather than a tax deduction. This is certainly a benefit, from the tax standpoint, to you, but helps build our future as well. If you are interested in supporting CNSC in this fashion, please make your checks payable to “Montana Community Foundation”, send them to CNSC, P. O. Box 1311, Plains, MT 59859, and we will send them directly to the Foundation for deposit in our account.
